Community Cinema
The movie theater used to be the center of every American downtown, a magical place on Main Street where the community gathered weekly for a look at the best stories the world had to offer, created by a generation's most talented writers, actors, directors, composers, and cinematographers.
The films are still great -- perhaps our culture's most powerful art form -- but the movie theaters have moved to the highways, apart from the places where we all live. Consequently, the moviegoing experience has lost its connection to the community.
At CinemaSalem, we believe that the movie theater can bring people together, and downtown Salem provides us a walkable district where neighbors naturally interact before and after the show, in restaurants, museums, shops, churches and synagogues, and community centers.
Just as the community supports us, we want to support the community. We will donate $.25 from each admissions ticket to deserving nonprofits through monthly CinemaSalem Grants, totalling up to $1000 per month. If your nonprofit organization is interested in applying, you can pick up an application form in the theater lobby.
